Racing may be the sport of kings but country racing in the Brisbane Valley evolved as a sometimes uneasy mix of Newmarket rules and a picnic race meet. This was demonstrated in 1904, for example, when the Upper Brisbane River Turf Club and the Brisbane River Picnic Club provided a joint meeting for all comers.
